Henkel and PostNL invest in Dutch laundry and dry-cleaning service

dobbi – powered by Persil

Never wash, iron or fold clothes again, and stop dropping them off at the dry cleaner’s yourself. From now on, you can rely on dobbi for all of that. The Amsterdam-based startup is offering a new, digital laundry delivery service. Two strategic partners have invested in this promising business model: PostNL and Henkel, with its top brand Persil.

"Perfectly clean clothes, returned within 48 hours: That’s the promise we make to our customers," said dobbi founders Ruben van Pelt and Maurits Tiethoff. "With just a few swipes on your smartphone, you determine when the clothes can be picked up and delivered. We use two-hour time slots between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. We work only with the very best dry cleaners in the Netherlands, which means we can guarantee the best-quality dry cleaning, washing, folding and ironing. We then deliver the clothes to any address in the Netherlands within 48 hours."

Strategic partners and investors on board

With multinational corporation Henkel and PostNL, dobbi has two strong partners on board. Thomas Schuffenhauer, Head of Corporate Venturing at Henkel Laundry & Home Care, said: “On-demand services are becoming increasingly important to consumers. Nowadays, people not only expect high-quality products, but also want the best services to meet their needs in a changing world. That’s why we are delighted to announce our strategic partnership with dobbi.”

About dobbi, and how it all began

Maurits Tiethoff founded Bubble & Stitch five years ago. "It started with a single, 24/7 dry-cleaning shop in Amsterdam, but soon we had various service points throughout the city’s business area," said Tiethoff. In the pursuit of ultimate convenience, he developed an innovative locker system. The next step was a door-to-door service in collaboration with PostNL, which was launched in early 2017. Bubble & Stitch was later named Best Dry Cleaner in the Netherlands and won seventh place in the world ranking.

Under the leadership of Ruben van Pelt, dry-cleaning service Topcleaning in Harderwijk was voted Best Dry Cleaning in Europe and second-best dry cleaner in the world. The plans for dobbi were hashed out during the biggest global dry-cleaning fair in Las Vegas, where the two founders decided to combine their knowledge and strengths to create a joint nationwide service in the Netherlands.

The name of the new service is a playful reference to Dobby, the house elf from Harry Potter. He can only be freed if someone hands him a piece of clothing.

Dobbi can now be used by all Amsterdam residents. Starting this summer, the service will become available in other Dutch cities as well. "Our goal is to be able to offer washing, ironing, folding and dry cleaning services to everyone in the Netherlands within a year," said van Pelt. “Everything revolves around service and maximum convenience.” The dobbi app can be downloaded in the App & Playstore.
